The line graph illustrates the population of four cities, Dhaka, Lagos, Manila and Turin, between 1990 and 2020, measured in millions. Overall, three of the cities grew substantially over the period, whereas Turin was the only one to decline, and then only marginally.
Dhaka recorded the most dramatic expansion, rising from 6.6 million to 21 million and more than tripling its population. It had overtaken Manila by 2000 and was the largest city by the end of the period. Lagos also grew threefold, from 4.8 million to 14.4 million, although it started as the smallest of the three growing cities. Manila, the largest in 1990 at 7.9 million, increased by six million to reach 13.9 million in 2020.
The rankings shifted considerably over the period. Lagos trailed Manila at every point until 2020, when it narrowly overtook it. The overall ordering in 2020 was therefore Dhaka, Lagos, Manila and Turin. Turin, by contrast, remained far smaller than the rest, slipping from 1 million to 0.85 million and staying almost flat between 2000 and 2010.
