Band 8 model answer · 174 words

Dear Ms Hughes,

I am writing to request a change to my working hours. I would like to start at 7.30 a.m. and finish at 3.30 p.m., rather than work the current 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. pattern.

The main reason is my family commitments. My daughter's nursery closes at 6.00 p.m., and under my current hours I struggle to collect her on time. An earlier finish would remove that pressure and allow me to avoid the worst of the evening rush-hour on my commute.

I would continue to work my full contracted hours, and I would remain available to the team between 9.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m., which covers the core period for our client calls. I have already reviewed my current projects and am confident that every deadline can be met. I would be glad to review the arrangement after three months if it is not working well for the team.

Thank you for considering this request. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss it at your convenience.

Best wishes,

Priya Raman

Why this scores band 8

Every bullet point is covered: a clear reason, a specific proposed schedule and a reassurance backed by concrete commitments such as core hours and a three-month review. The semi-formal tone suits a manager, with phrases like 'at your convenience' and 'I would be glad to review'. Cohesion comes from paragraphs that move logically from reason to proposal to reassurance.
